Alistair Overeem was to defend his Strikeforce belt for his first fight back in 2010 against who some believe to be the true heavyweight champion of the world - Fedor Emelianenko. Unfortunately, Overeem and Golden Glory have different plans for 2010.
News sources are reporting that Overeem will finish his one fight obligation to K-1 before returning to Strikeforce. The fight for K-1 is rumored for April or March of 2010, same time Overeem was originally said to face Emelianenko.
What this means to fans in the US? Fedor Emelianenko has a bout scheduled in April for Strikeforce, and the heavy rumor has been Alistair Overeem will be the man involved; Alistair Overeem will not compete in Strikeforce until later 2010. So the hopes of Alistair Overeem facing Fedor Emelianenko on CBS are once again put on hold. We have been assured that Alistair has not chosen any of his opponents, Golden Glory management has been “carefully choosing” his opponents, Alistair will fight anybody, anywhere, anytime. - Bas Boon
Back in September when M-1 Global joined forces with Strikeforce, Overeem’s manager called out M-1 Global as being “Cons, robbers, and crooks.” Overeem disappeared and was later discovered fighting overseas.
“It hasn’t escaped my notice that we are dealing with a bunch of crooks who wish to brand their name onto someone who has managed to build up a successful organization on his own with a good network deal,” said Overeem’s manager Bas Boon.
Recently, Overeem was said to come back to Strikeforce as soon as March of 2010 to defend his Heavyweight title. Now, it seems like we’ll have to wait another few months to thrown a new Strikeforce champion.
In the meantime, my spidey senses see an upcoming scurry involving Fedor Emelianenko against someone who’s name rhymes with “Han Denderson”?
