UFC 109 Relentless proved some old timers still had it and some did not.
Randy Couture and Matt Serra both handed UFC walking papers to their opponents, Mark Coleman and Frank Trigg, respectively. Couture dominated Coleman and in the second round, Couture got the take down, mixed in a little ground and pound, flipped Coleman over for a little RNC, and with Coleman refusing to tap, Couture said goodnight and sang him a lullaby. Serra on the other hand, treated Frank Trigg like a Jersey Shore cast member with a Rocky-esque beat down, barreling in with punches to the body and then clipping the chin with an overhead right, sending Trigg to the mat where Serra promptly landed three more rights and KO of the Night.
In the co-main event, WEC transfer Chael Sonnen refused to be denied and pulled out an upset over Nate Marquardt with old school wrestling and possibly solidifying his next loss against Anderson Silva. Mike Swick was choked out by Paulo Thiago and Demian Maia put on another lackluster win over Dan Miller.
In the Spike prelim matches, Melvin Guillard, who recently joined Greg Jackson’s camp, overcame his Achilles hill of dominating a fight until his opponent submitted him with a unanimous decision victory BJJ black belt Ronys Torres, and Mac Danzig squeezed out a narrow victory of Justin Buchholz.
